No lifeguards on duty

Play it safe on the water for a summer of memories. Keep your days in the water cool and easy by remembering these safety guidelines endorsed by the American Red Cross and other water-safety experts.

  • Make water safety your priority! Drowning can happen any time, but be especially cautious during the summer months when drowning incidents increase up to 89%.
  • Be cautious around ocean shoreline, rivers and lakes – even if you don’t plan on going in. Cold temperatures, currents and underwater hazards can make falling in dangerous.
  • Establish and consistently enforce water safety rules for your family. For example, set limits based on each person’s ability.
  • Swim or wade in designated areas
  • Swim with a buddy – ALWAYS
  • Ensure that everyone in your family learns to swim well. Enroll in age-appropriate water orientation and swimming classes.
  • Teach children to always ask an adult's permission to go near the water.
  • Supervise children closely whenever around the water – always stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions.
  • When a child is missing, check the water first, seconds count.
  • Require young children and weak swimmers in your supervision to wear U. S. Coast Guard approved life jackets in on or around any water.
  • Wear a life jacket when boating, rafting or tubing! Most boating-related deaths are from drowning. Put your life jacket on at the dock, deck or shore, and do not take it off until you are on dry land.
  • Make sure life jackets fit properly. Check the label for weight limits.
  • Know how and when to call 911.
  • Never allow anyone to swim alone.
  • Don’t drop kids off at the beach unsupervised
