Renowned ornithologist and urban ecologist John Marzluff reveals the surprising biodiversity in our urban and suburban areas.
Over many years of research and fieldwork, Marzluff and student assistants have closely followed the lives of thousands of tagged birds seeking food, mates, and shelter in cities and surrounding areas. The small glens, wooded gulches, and shrubby yards of urban areas create island-like habitats that provide new opportunities for not only “adapters,” like crows and Canada geese, but also for native creatures like tiny Pacific wrens and pileated woodpeckers, Marzluff reports.
Marzluff is a renowned ornithologist and urban ecologist, and professor of wildlife sciences at the University of Washington. He is author of In the Company of Crows and Ravens, Gifts of the Crow, Welcome to Subirdia, and two other books.
