Here's to the Women! Songs, Stories, and Images by Linda Allen
Sunday, January 26, 2020
Linda Allen presents a musical tribute to the 100th anniversary of suffrage for women.
The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1920, finally achieved suffrage for women. In the 19th century, the common sense of the day said that women were too delicate to participate in public affairs. Their proper role was to nurture children and obey their husbands. Suffragists saw the freedom to vote as a crucial step to full equality with men. Linda Allen introduces some of the women whose stories made the difference in the forty-year-long suffrage struggle.
Dr. Linda Allen is a songwriter, performer, and educator. She has worked with numerous organizations to promote women’s history, including the Washington Centennial Commission, the Washington Women’s Heritage Project, the Inquiring Minds program of Humanites Washington, and the Washington Women’s History Consortium.
