Mayor's corner

A friend of mine signs every email with the signature, “Be kind. It costs you nothing, and the rewards are limitless.” I’ve been reflecting on these words this week, as our world feels increasingly divided and uncertain. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and like there’s nothing we can do, but a simple act of kindness can make a daily difference in someone’s life – and usually makes us feel better too! Whether it’s helping a neighbor bring their trash cans out, letting a stranger go in front of you at the grocery store, or surprising a friend with a gift or small gesture, little actions can brighten someone’s day.

When my daughter Panda and I walk our neighborhood, I see how she makes an effort to greet our neighbors, complimenting their gardens, lawn art and/or pets. I can see her face light up when they smile back – the joy she has in giving joy to others. Each smile, compliment or kind gesture we share with each other brings us together. It is what I love about our community, the deep care and compassion we have for one another. So as we enter this season of gratitude, I hope you’ll take a moment to spread some love in our community, share a small act of kindness, and know you are making the world a better place.

Your city needs your voice

A great way to get involved and help your community is to volunteer your time and skills by serving on a board or commission. The City of Everett is seeking volunteers who have the desire to make a positive impact on their community. Serving on one of the City commissions, boards or committees can be a fascinating and rewarding experience. Community members are encouraged to apply for open positions on multiple boards. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, boards and commissions meetings are occurring virtually until further notice.

City Council adopts council district map A-9

In case you missed it, Everett City Council adopted council districts map A-9 at their Oct. 29 meeting. Beginning in 2021, the five districts will each elect one city councilmember, who must live in the district they represent. The remaining two council positions will be at-large and able to live anywhere within city limits. Celebrate the arts!

Everett’s artists bring inspiration and vibrancy to the city – let’s honor and celebrate them! The City of Everett Cultural Arts Commission invites nominations for the 2020 Mayor’s Arts Awards and the prestigious Richard Wendt Award of Excellence. The awards recognize the accomplishments of artists, arts and cultural organizations, and community members committed to enriching quality of life in Everett through the arts. Submit a nomination at everettwa.gov/artsawards.

Speaking of the arts, the City of Everett Cultural Arts Commission is also accepting applications for cultural arts grants to fund art programs and capital projects in 2021. The commission will award up to $40,000 in grants for 2021 to organizations expanding access to arts and culture within and for the Everett community, reflecting the City of Everett's values of equity, inclusion and diversity.
