Piper Pupdate

Our first-ever puppy livestream on September 15th was an adorable success! Hundreds of people tuned in to watch the playful puppies romp, run, wrestle and nap and we raised over $2,000 for the homeless pets in our care.

We recently checked in with Piper's new family to see how she was adjusting and received a wonderful update.

Piper's family, who renamed her Ashland, says: "She is a total sweetheart – loves to cuddle and always wants to be near us. She is slowly winning over our older dog, Monte, and always tries to squish her way onto his dog beds when he’s sleeping. She is super smart and alert and is already responding to training. We think she’ll be a great candidate for agility training when she gets older. Ash loves chasing her tail, going on walks and visiting the beach near our house."

A huge thank you to McClain Insurance Services for sponsoring our Puppy Livestream and thank you to all who tuned in and donated! These live-saving funds go a long way to help homeless pets, like Ashland.

If you missed this playful puppy livestream, you can still view it on Facebook.

Cat sleeping in barn

Barn Cats

Did you know EAS has a barn cat program? We often take in stray cats that have spent a majority of their lives living outside without much human contact, fending for themselves. These cats are often fearful of humans and the shelter environment and our goal is to get them into safe and caring homes that understand their unique needs as quick as possible in order to reduce their stress.

Barn cats are often feral or semi-feral and would do best in a warehouse, shop, barn or other structure that can house warm and dry bedding, clean water and a supply of food. Barn cats will often hide from humans but sometimes appreciate the company of other cats. Often, barn cats can be helpful accomplices in rodent control!

Our barn cats come spayed/neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed, treated for fleas and microchipped and while the adoption fee is waived, we appreciate a donation to help cover the cost of their care. Often the alternative for these cats is to live completely on their own while reproducing and adding to the overpopulation of feral cats in our community.

If you're interested in a barn cat, or two, you can find more information and submit an application on our website.

If you think there are feral cats in your neighborhood that need assistance, please call our shelter or your local animal control agency before attempting to capture them.

Volunteers Aly and Randy walking shelter dogs

Volunteer Spotlight - Awesome Aly!

We have a small team of staff and couldn't care for our homeless pets without the help of our amazing volunteers.

Aly has been volunteering at EAS since 2009 and has logged a whopping 5,900 volunteer hours! Before COVID-19 changed the way we operate, Aly was often at the shelter 7 days a week walking dogs and handling most of the dog walking volunteer program logistics. She is also an active member of our Wagworks team which works with the shelter's more under-socialized, fearful and exuberant dogs that may need some extra training and socialization.

Aly looks back on her time at EAS and says her most memorable moment was the "the intake, rehabilitation and training of the 8 dogs rescued from a South Korean meat farm. It still brings tears to my eyes to remember when those dogs arrived (we had to carry them into the shelter because they had never been out of cages) and how much work we did with them, and then getting them adopted. It was amazing!"

Besides building connections with the homeless pets, Aly says she's built some solid relationships with fellow volunteers, bonding through their mutual love of animals and motivation to help as many as they can.

Aly has two EAS rescue dogs of her own - Raina, who actually arrived at the shelter the same day she applied to volunteer and had been rescued from a hot car, and Buddy, who had been hit by a car and was surrendered to the shelter due to his injuries. Now Buddy is a certified Therapy Dog through Pet Partners and him and Aly volunteer together at The Full Life Care Center in Everett.

Thank you Aly, and all our amazing volunteers, for the selfless work you do for our shelter and homeless pets!

Meet Liam

Lovable Liam

Just in time for pumpkin season, meet handsome orange tabby, Liam!

Liam was found as a stray and was suffering from urinary blockage which required emergency care. He has spent some time recovering in a loving foster home and is now ready for his new home. At only one-year old, Liam is playful, active and affectionate and will make a wonderful family pet.

If you think you're ready to add this pumpkin to your patch, visit our website and submit an application.

While we're not currently open for general animal viewing, we are accepting applications for adoption appointments and our staff will follow up with next steps.
