On Wednesday, May 3, 2017; 6pm-7:30pm (doors open at 5:45pm) the Everett Animal Shelter is hosting a special volunteer orientation for their “Back of the House” volunteer program.
The Back of the House volunteers are the “behind the scenes” folks who keep the shelter running smoothly.
This orientation is not for any other position in our shelter. It is only for folks interested in joining our Back of the House program. See below for the details of this position.
There are three critical things done by the volunteers in this program:
LAUNDRY:
This position keeps the laundry moving. We have two industrial size washers and dryers that run all day, every day. These volunteers fill the washers, move laundry (towels, beds, blankets) to the dryer, then fold and put away the clean laundry.
DISHES:
This position washes all the animal dishes, KONGS and litter boxes in the shelter. That entails emptying, washing, rinsing, putting them through the sanitizer, drying and putting them where they belong.
KONGS:
Filling the KONGS with wet/dry food mixture and putting in the freezer. The dogs tell me this is the most important job. KONGS are their special morning treat, so we don’t really blame them for thinking it’s important.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
You can be 16/17 years old and volunteer on your own in this program. Your parent or legal guardian needs to attend the orientation with you and co-sign all of your paperwork.
You can be a team of an adult/youth. Youth must be at least 13 years old.
And of course, 18 years and older… you can volunteer on your own.
You must pass a Washington State Patrol background check (we’ll do that paperwork during the orientation).
This is a physical position. You are on your feet during your entire shift which is 1 ½ hours – 2 hours in length. You lift, bend, squat, step on a small step stool, carry, stand. It really is its own kind of circuit training.
Please see the Essential Job Requirements linked from our volunteer page on our website.
You must make a weekly commitment to a shift. The overall commitment to the program is 3 months.
OPEN SHIFTS:
Right now we have 3 shifst available on Saturday and 3 shifts available on Sunday. The first one of the day starts at 10am. The last one of the day starts at 3:30pm.
THIS POSITION DOES NOT HANDLE ANY ANIMALS.
For those of you who want to volunteer and help the animals in the shelter – this position is a BIG help with keeping the animals comfortable and clean while they are in our care. And the dogs want me to mention again that the KONGS are really important.
There is no pre-registration for the special Back of the House volunteer orientation. Just show up at the shelter. The front doors will open at 5:45pm. Orientation starts at 6pm.
This orientation is not for any other position in our shelter. It is only for folks interested in joining our Back of the House program.
We hope to see LOTS of you there!
