SMART Team Investigating Officer-involved Shooting Near Lake Stevens

(Updated Release: February 9, 2017 - 2:00 pm)

LAKE STEVENS, Wash. – Detectives are processing two scenes for the officer-involved shooting: the residence of the suspect and location where he confronted police. The initial 911 call, made around 10:15 a.m., came from the suspect’s residence at the 7100 block of 18th Pl SE from a male saying, “I want to kill cops”. Before officers arrived at the residence, additional 911 calls came from witnesses who said there was a man walking around the area with blood on his shirt and carrying a flag.

When police arrived in the area around 10:30, witnesses directed them to where the man had wandered, in an area between 70th Ave SE and SR 204. Officers located the suspect who reportedly was carrying a knife and gave him orders to stop and drop the knife. The male did not comply, advancing on the officers and reportedly stating, “Just kill me.” Less lethal alternatives, a Taser, were attempted on the suspect, but were unsuccessful. The suspect did not drop the knife and continued advancing. One shot was fired. Officers immediately began rendering aid and recovered the knife from the male. The male, believed to be a 33 year-old from Lake Stevens, was transported to Providence Regional Medical Center, where he died.

Cause and manner of death, as well as the identity of the suspect, will be determined by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner.

The involved Lake Stevens police officer has been with the agency for a little over a year and has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure.

The investigation is being conducted by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team, a team of detectives from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies who respond to and investigate police use of force incidents.

More information will be provided when available.

No further details are currently available. 70th Ave SE and 18th Pl SE from 71st St SE are still closed to the public for the investigation.
