[ARCHIVED] SMART Team Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Lynnwood

EVERETT, Wash. - Detectives with the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 10 a.m. today on Hwy 99 just north of 196 St SW.

The incident began when a 911 call was made from a business at the 19200 block of Hwy 99 of a male acting hostile and yelling inside in the business. The man fled the business on foot and three officers from the Lynnwood Police Department responded. When contacted, the male ran out into Hwy 99 several times as police officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. One officer reported the male was possibly armed with a knife or shank, who was advancing on officers. Verbal commands were given by officers to the suspect, but he continued to advance. Shots were fired at 9:48 a.m. and officers requested aid and attempted CPR on the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A blade was among the items recovered from the suspect.

The suspect is believed to be a white male in his 20’s. Identification of the decedent will be confirmed by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner.

The officer involved is a three year veteran of the Lynnwood Police Department.

Hwy 99 between 196th St SW and 188th ST SW will be closed for several hours for the investigation, possibly through evening commute times.

The investigation is being conducted by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team, a team of detectives from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies who respond to and investigate police use of force incidents.
