[ARCHIVED] Road closure alert: Right lane of northbound 19th Avenue SE at 12600 block

City of Everett road closure alert

Late Wednesday, June 9, the City’s sewer/drainage maintenance team responded to reports of a hole that formed in the bike lane on the 12600 block of 19th Avenue SE, also known as SR 527 or Bothell-Everett Highway, within the City of Everett. After responding to the site, crews observed a void under the sidewalk and bike lane around the hole. City staff immediately set up temporary traffic control for safety. They have since closed the northbound outside lane out of caution and placed a temporary covering over the hole in the bike lane, leaving one northbound lane open at this location. The right lane will remain closed to limit the loads running adjacent to the hole until a repair can be completed.

City staff are working with a geotechnical engineering consultant and contractor to evaluate and affect repairs. At this early stage, we estimate that it will take several months before we can completely repair the roadway. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has been notified as this is a state route.

Pedestrians are being detoured to the other side of the street at 129th Place SE, south of the closure, and 121st Street SE, north of the closure. Both are signalized intersections. As long as it is safe to do so during the planning phase of the project, the bike lane will be kept open and routed around the closure.  Once construction is underway, it will need to be closed. Bicycles will have a designated temporary lane in the right lane that is closed to vehicle traffic. Use of this temporary bicycle lane will be indicated by signs and traffic cones.

There may be some related congestion during the afternoon peak as a result of the traffic control, but it should not be a major traffic impact. Traffic conditions can be viewed via  WSDOT’s “SR 527 at MP 8.8: 132nd St SE / SR 96” traffic camera.
