HEALTHY STREETS PROGRAM

Select streets return to previous configuration

Everett streets that were closed to through-traffic to encourage active transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic are being returned to their previous configuration on Monday, Oct. 5.

The removal of the local access only restriction is being done for several reasons. Autumn’s shortened number of daylight hours increases the chance of nighttime pedestrian or cyclist interactions with vehicles. Also, cooler, wetter weather means decreased utilization to the point that sidewalks can safely accommodate pedestrians and skaters.

City staff will refocus its energy on implementation of the Bicycle Master Plan and pedestrian safety improvements. The City will continue to evaluate the need to accommodate increased opportunities for active transportation over the fall and winter, with the expectation that lessons learned on the Healthy Streets program will become part of the strategy as we execute the bicycle master plan.

Four street segments were open to local access only starting July 16:

  • Hoyt Avenue-Everett Avenue to 19th Street
  • Hoyt Avenue-38th Street to 32nd Street
  • Commercial Avenue-55th Street to Madison Street
  • Silver Lake Road at 19th Avenue SE

The four roads connect with bicycle and pedestrian facilities across the length of the city. Drivers should continue to expect to see people riding on the Hoyt Ave bike boulevard, the Commercial Ave portion of the Interurban Trail and on the Silver Lake Loop.

To promote the safe return to the previous configuration, drivers are encouraged to:

  • Obey all traffic laws, slow down and be predictable.
  • Share the road, yield to bicycles and pedestrians when appropriate.
  • Stay alert at all times; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes off the road.

Community members are invited to provide feedback about the program at everettpw@everettwa.gov
