Grand Avenue Park Bridge April/May, 2020, Construction Update

While the major lifting has been complete, many pieces of the bridge project continue to be put in place with the goal of completion in early summer. Under the Governor’s orders, as this is a Public Works project, construction was allowed to continue. However, progress remains dependent on a healthy work force to provide both the supply chain of materials and the skilled labor to finish the construction. So far, we remain healthy, and we hope that this finds you safe and healthy as well. Speaking of safety, it remains important not to enter the construction worksite at this time. Please wait for completion of the project for access to the bridge. Below is a summary and photos of progress made in April and the first part of May:

  • Guardrail work continued with installation of frames and aluminum panels capped off with top channels that include electrical wiring and lighting for the pedestrian pathway across the bridge.
  • In areas with completed guardrails, wooden false decks that supported the concrete crews are being removed. Today, lifts were moved onto the railroad tracks to bring down the wood. As this is done, the bridge will begin to take on its final appearance and can be seen on the camera perched on Lombardi’s restaurant accessible at the project website.
  • Sidewalks around the elevator tower are complete and other site work (curbing, irrigation, drainage) is in progress.
  • City forces and Frontier (Ziply) work on the final communication connections for the new elevator. Fire detection equipment has been installed.
  • Paving and striping of West Marine View Drive and the parking lot around the elevator tower is currently anticipated in June. The current traffic control will continue for this work and through the end of the project.
  • Construction of the east abutment walls is nearing completion and grading of the park entrance to the bridge is in progress.
  • Light bases are being poured, and sidewalk installation will take place in late May or early June.
  • Upcoming one-block closures are anticipated for the 1600 block of Grand Avenue for saw-cutting (1 day) and demolition work (1 week). Signage will indicate timing.
  • Crews have responded to and removed vandalism; if you witness vandalism in progress please call the police.
