[ARCHIVED] Cat care for the soul

Pat and Mackelrod the cat

In July of 2018, Pat was searching for a way to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals. He found himself at Everett Animal Shelter where he learned a lot about animal care and himself.

A self-proclaimed introvert, Pat admits he wasn't sure the Feline Customer Care position, that involves working closely with potential adopters, would be a good fit. He almost backed out but says, "I chose to give it a try, and I'm so glad I did. I now enjoy working with people too, whether I'm helping someone search for their lost pet, or adopt a new one."

Pat has since logged over 450 hours caring for and socializing our homeless cats as well as assisting adopters. Along with his regular duties, Pat is an active participant in the shelter's Smarty Paws pilot program, which allows volunteers to read to our most under-socialized and shy cats to help desensitize them to human presence. Pat was dedicated to keeping this program running strong when the shelter took in 25 cats from a severely overcrowded living situation in July. These cats, dubbed the "Disney Cats," are available for adoption and looking for warm homes for the holidays. They'll require special adopters that can offer lots of patience and even more love as they continue to blossom.

Pat says he's often asked how it doesn't make him sad to be around the homeless pets each week and he replies, "Yes it tugs on my heartstrings. But they are going to be at the shelter whether I am or not, so I want to be there with them. When I go home, I know they are safe, warm, dry and loved."
