EVERETT, WA – The City of Everett’s popular civic academy, Everett Essentials, returns in 2020. Classes start in late February and will offer students a unique opportunity to learn about City operations and services directly from City staff. Applications are now available.
“We’ve heard from community members that they want to know more about their local government and how they can effectively engage in our processes and programs,” said Julie Frauenholtz, community development director. “We’re excited to bring back Everett Essentials, the course was so well received in 2017!”
The academy includes topics like Everett history and demographics, public safety, government structure, community services, city budget and Everett’s future. Students will tour City facilities and participate in interactive exercises designed to give them an in-depth understanding of City operations and how they can be a part of local government decisions and projects, including leadership opportunities.
“It’s a chance to get an interactive, behind-the-scenes look at the City and to learn from experts in each department,” said Frauenholtz.
Classes begin Saturday, Feb. 29 and run through Monday, May 11. Most sessions will be held on Monday from 6-9 p.m., with three Saturday field trips scheduled. Participants are expected to attend at least 8 of the 10 sessions to graduate.
Residents from all backgrounds are encouraged to attend. Youth, 16-17 years old, can participate with parent or guardian permission. Participation in the academy is limited to 35 students and priority will be given to Everett residents who are new to civic engagement. Tuition is $50 and financial assistance is available.
