9:30 p.m. storm update
Tonight, City of Everett crews are continuing to respond to reports of flooding and damage reports as a result of today’s two rain events. As of 9 p.m., some intersections still had water over the roadway but rain has subsided, and the stormwater is receding. Crews will work through the night to address service requests.
West Marine View Drive is being partially reopened -- crews are setting up traffic control at this hour and expect one lane in each direction to be open in the next couple of hours. The roadway was closed following the midday rain event and had to be closed shortly after reopening due to a second rain event approximately 6:30 p.m.
Property owners who have experienced flooding as a result of today’s storm events are encouraged to call Public Works 24-hour Dispatch at 425-247-8821 to report their situation and, if needed, to file a claim for damages using the City’s website.
Today’s rain events are an example of Everett’s not uncommon microburst weather events that can overwhelm the capacity of the City’s stormwater pipes. Recent projects like the Legion Golf Stormwater Detention project, Sewer M, Alverson and North Wetmore Stormwater Separation were all part of an effort to reduce impacts of these intense storms. The Grand Avenue Park Bridge project is specifically designed to convey stormwater off the bluff to stormwater outfalls in the Bay. Large stormwater pipes under the bridge, that is currently awaiting installation later in September, are key to completing all the work that has led up to this point.
From 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm today, a City of Everett rain gauge located near 13th Street and Grand Avenue recorded 1.82 inches of rain -- more that twice the expected intensity of the 100-year storm in this area, which is 0.87 inches per hour. Rain gauge information from the second event today is not yet available.
