Arrest made in fatal fire

(Updated News Release – January 23, 2018)

EVERETT - Police detectives determined the fatal fire that occurred at 2229 Colby Ave on December 21st was the result of arson. Through the investigation, a 40 year-old Everett male was identified as a person of interest for setting the fire. A tip led detectives to Bellingham, WA where the male was questioned and he confessed to starting the fire.

During their investigation, detectives determined that on December 21st, a male walked to the Colby Square Apartments (2229 Colby Ave) where he started a fire in the only stairwell that connected the first and second floors. As the fire grew, residents were forced to jump to safety or find alternative ways out. Of the two residents transported to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett for injuries, a 76 year-old female passed away. The cause and manner of her death is still under investigation.

The male was arrested on probable cause and booked into the Snohomish County Jail for arson and assault charges.

Investigators seek information about fatal Everett fire

EVERETT – Police detectives and Fire investigators are asking the public to provide any information they may have about the fatal December 21st fire that occurred at 2229 Colby Ave.

Everett Police detectives continue working with Everett Fire investigators to determine the cause of the fatal fire that occurred at 2229 Colby Ave on about 10:20 p.m. on December 21st which killed a 76 year-old female resident.

(Updated Everett Fire Release - December 26, 2017)

On December 25, 2017 the patient that was hospitalized with smoke inhalation passed away at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.

The fire is still under investigation.

(Initial Everett Fire Release - December 23, 2017)

On December 21st at approximately 10:20 PM, a 2-alarm fire occurred in a two-story apartment complex located at 2229 Colby Avenue in Everett. The fire was briefly a 3-alarm fire before the arriving resources were returned after the fire was controlled. The apartment building has 14 units and all occupants were displaced. The American Red Cross assisted in providing housing to those in need.

There were two injuries to occupants of the complex. One of the injuries occurred when an occupant jumped approximately 10 feet to the ground, this victim has since been released from the hospital with minor injuries. The other occupant was overcome by smoke inhalation and continues to be hospitalized in critical condition.

Everett Fire Investigators are being assisted by the Everett Police Department and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to determine the origin and cause of the fire. They have completed their work at the scene and have turned it over to the building owner and a private construction company, who are checking for any asbestos related concerns due to the age of the building, to start the recovery process.

There will be no further updates regarding this fire over the weekend and Christmas holiday.
